Homes Across Uruguay
What to Know About Uruguay
The Coast
About 660 kilometres of shoreline, roughly two thirds along the Río de la Plata and the rest facing the open Atlantic.
Getting Around
Montevideo to Punta del Este is about two hours by road, and most trips between towns in the country run under six.
Peak Season
December to February, with January the busiest. March holds the warm water and loses most of the crowds.
Crossing From Buenos Aires
The fast ferry reaches Colonia in about an hour and a quarter. Montevideo has flights year round and Punta del Este adds direct ones in summer.
The Quiet East
Past Punta del Este the coast empties out. La Paloma, Cabo Polonio and Punta del Diablo trade nightlife for dunes and low-rise beach towns.
Whale Season
Southern right whales move along the coast between July and October and can be watched from shore.
The coast runs west to east, from Colonia across the water from Buenos Aires to the Brazilian border.
